Thomas Drummond, Director of Education
Mr. Thomas Drummond joined Orion’s Quest following a 32 year career in pubic education and completing his career as a middle school science teacher in the Walled Lake School District in Walled Lake, Michigan. Drummond holds a Master's Degree in Science Education and Administration from the University of Michigan and an Educational Specialist Degree in Science Education from Wayne State University. He has served as a middle school science teacher and building administrator in two different school systems in Michigan.

While a classroom teacher, Drummond developed and wrote a middle school Astronomy curriculum entitled, Astronomy, a Study in Three Dimensions, Past, Present, and Future, which was published in 1980. His work has been used in the 8th grade science curriculums and in adult extension classes.

Drummond has extensive experience in the school accreditation process being actively involved as a teacher and as an administrator. As such, he has gained valuable insight in addressing the issues of curriculum development, the improvement of academic achievement and the increase of interest in science by both middle and high school students.

The Orions Quest Staff

Peter H. Lawrie, Executive Director

Mr. Peter Lawrie is an educator with over 30 years experience in public schools. He holds a Master’s Degree in School Administration with a minor in Science and is certified to teach grades K-12. Lawrie’s career includes assignments as a classroom teacher, program director and for seventeen years a building principal.

Active in Environmental Education, Lawrie directed the Resident Camping Program for the Wayne-Westland Community School District in Westland, MI. for over twenty years. His Resident Camping Guide, An Administrative Manual for Teachers and Administrators, was published in 1978. Lawrie was also involved in the creation and operation of Sassafras Trails, the school district’s nature center.

Following retirement, Lawrie worked for several years as an independent educational consultant to business and industry. Assuming a leadership role during the Ladybugs in Space pilot program, Lawrie was instrumental in the successful conclusion of that activity. Since that time, he has led the conceptualization and definition of the ORION’S QUEST program.

In a parallel career, Lawrie served 34 years in the U.S. Navy/U.S Naval Reserves, recently retiring with the rank of Captain. Lawrie also serves on the Board of Directors of Camp Michawana in Hastings, Michigan.

Where We've Been
On July 23, 1999, the Space Shuttle Columbia carried Ladybugs in Space into orbit thus beginning the final phase of the educational program that would lead to the formation of Orion’s Quest.
